Coming out of the war, he became a calculator for aeronautical companies, and continued working in the military and aeronautical fields. His novels frequently dealt with these themes of weaponry, aeronautics, and overall, a kind of third person removed analytical narrative. These narratives, of which On The Beach is the most famous, being made into an early cold war era apocalyptic movie, involved technology and its effects, and the intersection of the human and the technologic. Round The Bend, which he wrote prior to On the Beach, has a new type of religion arising around the figure of an aircraft mechanic.
